December 30, 1903, Iroquois Theater Fire 1 Unidentified

On December 30, 1903, the play Mr. Blue Beard was playing at the Iroquois Theater in Chicago Illinois. During the second act, the curtain was caught on fire possibly by an electrical short circuit. This made several of the theatergoers go into a panic. Some were calmed by the fact of an actor trying to keep them calm. But the theater was burning down around them so many tried to escape.

The fire extinguishers that the theater had were meant to be thrown at fires on the ground and were useless against this fire as it rose. Three exits were forced open but unluckily lead to unfinished fire escapes. Some of the doors opening caused the fire to increase. Many people were trampled, crushed and asphyxiated in the fire.

Even though the theater claimed before the fire that it was "absolutely fireproof" it was not. It had been noted by several people including the fire department captain, and the editor of Fireproof Magazine that it was not.  In fact, it was hazardous as the theater did not follow the rules. The fire warden was warned, but because they knew the owner would ignore it. Unfortunately, the carelessness of the owners caused 602 people to die.

One of the victims was never identified.

The victim was a white woman around 50-year-old. Her face was still recognizable when she died. She is buried in Montrose Cemetary in Chicago.

UNIDENTIFIED: October 10, 1914 Yuma, Arizona John Doe

 On October 10 1914 the body of a man was found in Yuma, Arizona. He had been murdered the same day, but it's unstated how. The murderer was unknown. 

John Doe was a black male around 40-years-old.

Suspicious Deaths: Edgar Allen Poe

 

Edgar Allan Poe is one of the most known Authors of America. He was a poet, writer, critic, and editor that  Many of his short stories and poems haunted the minds of the readers. He’s even credited with giving birth to the detective story.  He’s even inspired many like Alfred Hitchcock. His poems and stories have even been adapted into a film and T.V. Poe even wrote a poem that the Baltimore Ravens were named after.

Born on January 19, 1809, in Boston, Massachusetts, but was raised in Richmond Virginia. It’s not surprising that Poe’s young life was not shy from death at an early age. Before he was 3 years old both of his parents had died, his first love died when he was 15, and his foster mother when he was 20.

Poe did not know his parents and was separated from his brothers and sisters after their mother had died. He was sent to live with John and Frances Valentine Allan who were tobacco merchants. They never officially adopted Poe. He had gone to a good school and grew up in a good environment. But John and Poe did not get along, but Frances and he did. John did not like the fact that Poe wasn’t following in the family business and wanted to do literature.

When Poe was 6 he was sent for schooling in England. He returned to America when he was 11.

By the time Poe was 13, he was considered a prolific poet. Both his foster father and headmaster tried to discourage him. Neither could as he focused on his poetry. It was rumored that Poe even wrote poetry on the back of his foster father's paperwork.

By the time he was an adult, Poe did not mend his relationship with his father. Poe had gotten into the University of Virginia in 1826. Poe was a great student who excelled in his classes but did not get enough money from Allan to pay for everything. In order to help Poe turned to gamble, but it backfired causing him to go into debt. This was also the time that Poe started to drink excessively.

When he returned home he found that his fiance Sarah Elmira Royster was engaged to someone else. This made Poe decide to move to Boston and join the military. In 1827 Poe published his first poetry book called Tamerlane and Other Poems. In 1829 he published his second collection of poems called Al Aaraaf, Tamerlane, and Minor Poems.

In 1829 Poe was honorably discharged from the military. He had acquired the label regimental sergeant major. Poe’s father refused to give him the money to stay a cadet, and when Poe began to ignore his duties and violating regulations the military discharged him. Some think that he did it to spite his father.

He then went to New York City where he published his third poetry book Poems in 1831. Poe then moved to Baltimore to live with his Aunt Maria Clemm and her daughter Virginia. Poe was not rich and could not sustain himself on his own. Even after his father’s death in 1834, he wasn’t left with anything extravagant. In 1835 though Poe found a job at the Southern Literary Messenger as an editor in Richmond, Virginia. Poe brought with him his Aunt and his 12-year-old cousin. While being an editor he published many of his own poems and stories.

In 1836 when he was 26 he married his 13-year-old cousin Virginia. The two were first cousins when Poe started to live with His Aunt Maria Clemm and Virginia he began doting on her. She eventually became the inspiration and a love interest. It was not uncommon at the time for first cousins to marry.

In the late 1830’s and 1840’s Poe’s works began to get more attention, but he didn’t make much profit from his works. He started editing for Burton’s Gentleman’s Magazine and Graham’s Magazine in Philadelphia and the Broadway Journal in New York City.

Sadly on January 30, 1847, Virginia died from a 5 year-long battle with tuberculosis. She was 24 years old. This affected Poe deeply. He was reported to not want to see his wife’s face dead and would have wanted to remember seeing her as alive. Not having a picture of her he hired a painter to paint her.

On October 3, 1849, Poe was found wandering the streets of Baltimore delirious. He was brought to Washington Medical Hospital. It was found out that he was not wearing his own clothes. It was said that Poe was never coherent enough to say what had happened to him.

On October 7, 1849, at the age 40-years-old, Poe met with death and like many of his poems and stories, it’s a mystery. At the time Newspapers claimed that it was congestion of the brain from his alcoholism. In reality, no one is sure how he had died. There are many theories on what had happened.

Some think it might have been caused by a beating, or epilepsy, or even Alcohol poisoning, and many more theories. Even one theory is that he was a victim of electoral fraud which citizens force people to vote repeatedly for a candidate. They make the person change their clothes and force them to vote for a certain candidate which would have accounted for him not wearing his own clothes. It can sometimes lead to violence and sometimes death.

And the man who wrote about mysteries death involved a large mystery.

UNIDENTIFIED: September 19, 1902 Detroit, Michigan Unknown Man

At 7:10 p.m. on September 19, 1902, an accident would happen on Jefferson Avenue in Detroit, Michigan. No 176 Woodward car heading west hit an unknown man was leaning over the side of the platform of a Rapid Railway car that was heading East. 

He was still alive and would lay on the road in the rain. He had been bleeding from his ears and had internal injuries. It was said that medical help for him was overlooked, and would soon die. The coroner arrived he was in the same place he died. Angry at the crowd that was watching the spectacle he asked why no one took him off of the road. This caused the crowd to go silent. 

In the man's pocket was an article from the Toledo Blade, the article was about a similar accident. It is possible he was recently in Ohio City. A jury found that the man's death was an accident from his own carelessness. 

The man was a white male and was around 35-years-old. He had black hair and a sandy almost red mustache. He had the tattoo J.M.C. on the upper part of his right arm. He was 6 ft and 190 lbs. He was wearing a black worsted coat, light striped trousers, a black topcoat, black flannel overshirt, black lace shoes, black socks, and a black fedora. 

It's unknown if he had been identified or not, but his grave is still marked as "Unknown Man".

Unsolved Murder of Arthur "Buddy" Louis Schumacher

 

On July 24, 1925, around 9 a.m. 8-year-old Arthur "Buddy" Schumacher left his house in Wauwatosa, Wisconsin. He had left with some neighborhood boys and was last seen by them after they hopped off a freight train they'd jumped on to get a ride to a nearby swimming hole. 

The boys said that a man on the train accosted and asked them where they were going. This scared the boys and they jumped out, but Buddy did not jump off with them. They then ran He jumped off on the otherside and the man also jumped off. They last saw Buddy at the train tracks with the man. 

A search would be done looking for Buddy. It was initially thought by police that maybe the freight had carried him far away or that he had accidentally drowned at the river where the boys planned to go. With there being no evidence of the boy showing up people began to suspect that he had been abducted. 

Buddy's body would be found 7 weeks later just a mile from his home. It was obvious that the young boy was murdered. His handkerchief was deep down his throat and he was missing some of his clothing. It's likely died the day he went missing and it's unknown what exactly his cause of death was.

There were many leads, but nothing panned out and Buddy's murder remains unsolved.

Murder of Hannah Rogers Harding

By 1733 62-year-old Amaziah Harding and his wife 65-year-old Hannah had been together for around  40 years (the first child was born in 1694). The relationship had been abusive especially in the last 20 years of marriage. He would see her as a "Plague" in his life. 

On July 18, 1733, Hannah would die due to Amaziah's abuse at their home in Eastham, Massachusetts. He either beat her or threw her down the stairs, or both. This would lead to her death. He would bring her to their bed and wrap her in blankets to make it seem she died in her sleep. He would summon a neighbor woman to tell her his wife died.

As per local tradition, he asked the neighbor woman to dress and get his wife ready for burial. The neighbor was suspicious as she came over. An hour earlier one of their sons had told her that Hannah was in good health. Throughout the time he spoke as if he was grateful for her death that she was a "plague" in his life. Seeing that she had blood and bruises on her throat, lips, and cheek. Knowing he was abusive she asked how she died.

Amaziah told the woman that she had drank rum and sat on the door sill, and he laid in bed. he claimed to her when he woke up that morning that she was in the bed and would not respond to him. That she had died naturally. The neighbor woman saw through his lies and refused to get the body ready until the coroner saw the body. 

The coroner would state that Hannah died from foul play. Amaziah would be charged with capital murder. He would get the death penalty and hanged on June 5, 1734.

Murder of Harry Patterson

On July 8, 1914, a group of boys went to a swimming hole in Yeager, Oklahoma. A fight broke out between two close friends 13-year-old Nathan Halford and 12-year-old Harry Patterson. Nathan would then stab Harry in the chest with a knife. Harry would run and scream for help as he tugged at the knife. He would soon drop dead from it as the knife had hit his heart.

I could not find more information on the aftermath of this murder.

UNIDENTIFIED: July 7, 1914 St. Maries, Idaho John Doe

 On July 7, 1914, a man was shot in the leg in St. Maries, Idaho, and die. There's little information in this case and it's not stated if he was intentionally shot or if the person who shot him was known. It's just known that his identity was never discovered. 

He was a white male around 40-years-old.

INFANTICIDE: June 11, 1932 Perrysburg, Ohio

 On June 11, 1932, a newborn boy was left abandoned in Perrysburg, Ohio. He would die from exposure and hemorrhage through an untied umbilical cord. It was believed he was born 3 days before he died and was found.

Crazy Crimes: Phantom Barber of Pascagoula

 In 1942 WWII was in its 3rd year and towns across America were manufacturing weapons and supplies for it. The little town of Pascagoula, Mississippi was no exception. It is a coastal town and a perfect place to build warships. This had increased the population of the small town and it was thriving. Something strange began to happen in the summer of 1942.

On June 5, 1942, someone had slit the window screen at the Lady of Victories covenant. Two young girls were sleeping but awoke when a man they described as "Sorta short, sorta fat, and wearing a white sweatshirt was in the room. The girls were both missing a lock of hair and that was all he did.

A few days later on Monday the Barber struck again. He had slit open the window and snuck into the room that 6-year-old Carol Peattie. She was sleeping next to her twin brother. He had cut the girl's hair and had left a bare footprint at the scene.

It was believed that the same man had attacked a sleeping couple. He snuck in through a screen he had slit and entered the home. Neither was killed, and his typical trophy wasn't taken. It's also thought that he had also attacked another victim by using chloroform. But it's unsure if either case was connected to the Phantom Barber.

57-year-old Chemist William Dolan was charged with the crime involving the couple. He was not charged with any of the other hair snatching crimes. They believed he was guilty of them though because police claimed a bundle of hair was found behind his home. In the eyes of the people saw him as the Phantom Barber. It's possible that the police wanted to end the case and placed blame on William Dolan to stop the public fear.

STRANGE HISTORY: Aurora, Texas UFO

 

On April 17, 1897, around 6 a.m. early risers in Aurora, Texas were surprised by the sight of something crashing from the sky. The UFO was seen flying over the town and was only going twelve or ten miles per hour. It slowly started descending as if there was something was wrong with the machinery. It eventually hit Judge Proctors windmill in the north of town.

There were pieces of destruction for several acres. The windmill was demolished, the UFO was also demolished, and the judge's flower garden and water tank were destroyed from the crash.  

The only casualty was the lonely pilot of the ship. Even though he was badly mutilated it was obvious that he was not of this world. There were also papers from the wreckage in an unknown language that was similar to hieroglyphics. 

The next day they gave the spaceman they assumed to have been from Mars an Earthly funeral.

In the Aurora Cemetery the body of the "pilot" they then named Ned. In 1972 scientists wanted to dig up the body and investigate. The cemetery association blocked their requests because only the next of kin are allowed to give permission to exhumations. Even though there was no known next of kin or if Ned was a spaceman or even a poor animal casualty of the supposed crash. At this same time, the grave marker was stolen.

It's believed that the whole event may have been a hoax by the townspeople. They had previously had many tragedies happen in the town. The cotton fields were destroyed by a boll weevil infestation, a fire on the west side destroyed some building and killing some people, and a spotted fever that caused some to be quarantined. It didn't help that the railroad was 27 miles from Aurora. So it's possible that in threat of dying out caused the townspeople to create a hoax that would attract many to their small town.

Murder of Lenore Anna Cohen and Charles "Charlie" Murray

   

On March 19, 1915, little 5-year-old Lenore Cohen was seen in the Tenement building she lived on 3rd Ave. in Manhattan, New York by a neighbor. She smiled and showed the milk and candy she had. Her Aunt Mrs. Eckers asked the young girl to go on an errand to get milk for her. Leonore was excited as a penny was usually a reward.

 Ms. Augusta Johnson lived on the second floor. She heard a small cry outside her door 15 minutes after the other neighbor saw her. She opened the door and saw nothing, but stumbled over Leonore when she stepped out the door. The murderer probably heard Augusta's screams as it had aroused everyone in the Tenement. Leonore was still alive at this point. and was carried up to the third floor where her aunt lived. Her cousin tried to resuscitate her as she was foaming from the mouth, but she did not survive.

She had been hacked at with a knife. She had also been "criminally assaulted" possibly meaning molested. A later article states that her clothes were unbuttoned. There were finger marks on her throat. There were two sets of stairs in the building and Leonore didn't typically use the ones she was found on. Police believed that the murderer forced her to the area she was found. There was a cord found with grey hairs and is unknown if it was a part of the case.

It was brought to the police's attention that girls on 3rd Avenue have been harassed by an oldish guy who offered to buy them candy if they go with them.

Less than two months later on the night of May 3, 1915, 4-year-old Charles Murray was playing in behind the Tenement building he lived in on First Ave. in the East side of Manhattan, in New York. He was last seen alive 20 minutes before he was discovered. His 6-year-old sister walked into the hallway and saw a "foreign man" leaving it in a hurry. Shortly after she found her brother.

There are two gruesome crime scene photos. I will not post it as it shows the boy's intestines, but it's obvious whoever murdered him gutted him. It's described that the perpetrator hacked at the boy. His clothes were left unscathed from knife marks as the perpetrator unbuttoned his shirt before killing him. Just like the murderer of Lenora had. One article notes that a piece of the body was taken.

Several letters were sent to the mother of Leonore. The writer claimed to be the killer and boasted of his crimes stating the Eckard's (relatives of theirs) knew of the murders. The letters were signed with H.B. Richmond, Jack the Ripper. It was later found that a man named Edward Richmond had written the letters. 

A letter was also sent to Mrs. Murray, but it seems to have been written by another person. This letter claimed they were going to continue their crimes. 

There were several suspects, but none of them were convicted of the crime.

MISSING: Charles Hurd

 

On February 18, 1937, 32-year-old Charles Hurd was last seen in the Manhattan borough of New York City, New York. He went to work as usual and left at closing time. He was working as a manager of a real estate and mortgage department at Dows Estates Inc. at the 10 block of Williams Street. After he left he had dinner at a restaurant and night club on east 54th Street, he cashed and small check and had left.

At 9 p.m. he crashed his Ford Convertible Coupe that had the New Jersey License plate number I-E65231 into the pillar of an elevated railway structure at 3rd Ave. and 37th St. It was believed he only suffered from minor injuries and drove away. He was never seen again after this.

 He may have driven towards where he was staying at the Kenmore Hall Hotel. At the time he was separated from his wife and was staying there. He was a member of a well-known family in New York. 

Charles was a 32-year-old white male at the time. He was 5'10" and 180 lbs. He has brown hair and blue/grey eyes. He was wearing a grey overcoat, tan shoes, and grey fedora.

UNIDENTIFIED: Feb. 15, 1957 Watsonville, California

On Feb. 15, 1957, the head of a woman was found in a shallow grave under a railroad trestle in the Pajaro River Levee in Southern Santa Cruz County, California. The head was inside of a grocery bag, but her body was not found. According to one news article another large grocery bag was found in the area that had some red discolorations. Similar discolorations were found on the cheek of the head. It's believed she died in 1956.

Head belonged to an African American woman between the ages of 28 to 52-year-old. She had a gold upper tooth.

UNIDENTIFIED: Jan 28, 1956 Gorman, California Earl Doe

 On Jan. 28, 1956 an African American male stopped a vehicle on US 99 Highway in Gorman, California. He stopped them to borrow a jack. He then tried to cross the highway and was struck by a vehicle traveling northbound. He was transported to the Newhall Hospital but had died. He may have gone by the name Earl and might have lived in a motel at 27th and Long Beach in Los Angeles.

He was an African American male between 30 and 35 years old. He was 5'7" and 150 lbs. He has black hair and brown eyes.

Murder of Albert Lucia

On December 25, 1883, 32-year-old Christian Reibling was drinking early for the holiday in Lyndon, Illinois. Already drunk he went to the general store of C.W. Parkhurst looking to buy more alcohol. He got mad when he was told that the store did not sell liquor anymore. This angered him and at the same time, 19-year-old Albert Lucia came into the store.

For some reason, his anger was focused on Albert. He would then threaten Albert with his pocket pistol and tell him to leave the store. Albert being the meek and harmless type of youth left the store and went to a livery stable owned by Constable G.R. Cady. It was probably to seek some protection.

Christian not knowing that the boy went to the livery stable went there also. He would then see Albert laying on a pile of blankets and would get angry again. He would threaten him and told him to leave. 

Albert would state he did not have to get out unless Mr. Cady said so. Mr. Cady would stay silent and not request the boy to leave. Christian would then get his gun out and point it at Albert as he stood between him and the door. Telling him he had to leave. 

An effort was done in trying to take the gun away, but a shot was fired and hit Albert in the leg. It would shatter the bone. Albert would not die automatically, but his wound would cause infection and Albert would die on Jan. 5, 1884. 

He would admit that he did not remember the murder. That he had been drinking diluted alcohol the day before and a bottle of gin with a friend the day of. He stated that if he was in his right mind he would have not hurt the boy. At trial, he claimed that a smallpox sore he had in his head had helped cause him to murder the boy also. He said he regretted his actions that day. He would be found guilty and set to hang on May 16, 1884, in Morrison, Illinois.

Christian's last night was spent will no incident. He went to bed a little later. He was awake by the time the jailer came to his cell at 7 a.m. and stated that he slept very well that night. He was a little nervous and his stomach was upset. He didn't want the eggs and ham that was for breakfast, because he had no appetite. He did want coffee though of which he drank profusely. He would pray continuously that morning mostly in German. 

He would then see Reverend T.E.V. Sweet and Reverend Edward Breen. Prayers were offered to him and he would pray and talk as he walked around. The Sherrif's daughter at one point offered an orange to him to which he ate, and he smoked two cigars. 

At his request, the Sherrif and three members of the church choir would sing to him some religious songs. During the midst of this, he began to cry and he went back to his cell to conceal that he was crying while listening to them sing. 

He said the crying wasn't because of regret, but because of the religious ecstasy, he had drifted away from. He felt that he had been forgiven for his sins. He was accepting of his fate but admitted that it was hard to face the gallows. 

Around 150 people from the surrounding area came to see Christian hang. People were dressed in their Sunday best. Few who came were admitted into the enclosure, none of which were women. Though many women also came to watch the execution. 

His last words were; "Well," he said smiling sadly and bowing to the crowd." I am sorry for what was done and don't have unkind feelings toward anybody, and hope they have none against me. I believe I will be saved, for Christ died for our sakes. I believe it just as firmly as I live. I hope I shall go to a better place and I believe I will be saved by Him." He would hesitatingly look at the sheriff and smiled. "And I want to thank the Sheriff Mr. Beach for his kindness. He had always treated me as a gentleman." He then looked at the deputy sheriff. "Mr. Cole has also been kind to me so has Mrs. Beach. Well, that's all I have to say, gentlemen."

Mr. Sweet would recite a prayer for Christian, when he finished the prayer he was hung at 2:06. He went straight down and struggled for an instant. He would be dead by 2:15 his neck was broken. The on-seers who were permitted to watch were civil, but those outsides tried to make their way in or were climbing trees so they could watch. None of the people there were relatives of his.

STRANGE HISTORY: Ghost Ship of S.S. Baychimo

 

Baychimo crew bringing supplies to the shore. 

In 1914 the cargo ship SS Ångermanelfven was built in Sweden. It was initially used on trading routes between Hamburg and Sweden until August of 1914 when WWI started. After WWI the boat was transferred to the U.K. as a part of Germany's reparations. In 1921 The Hudson's Bay Company bought the ship and renamed it the S.S. Baychimo. It was used it to trade pelts in Inuit settlements along the Victoria Island coast of Canada Northwest Territories and back to Scotland.

On October 1, 1931, the cargo vessel S.S. Baychimo was heading to Vancouver but became icebound in the waters near Barrow, Alaska. It was towards the end of a trade run, but the crew couldn't do anything about it. They tried their best to dig the ship out, but it was no use they weren't able to do it.

They decided that the best thing to do was to wait out the winter so that the ship would be free. They hiked over to the closest Alaskan City. They waited a few days and it did break free, but then got stuck again a week later. 

The Hudson Company decided to airlift 22 or 19 of the crew member and 14 or 17 of them stayed to keep an eye on the ship. They made a small camp on the shore near the ship. They anticipated they'd stay until the end of winter. 

On November 24th there was a massive blizzard that blew in. The blizzard caused the men to stay inside. When the storm was over they came out and found that the ship was gone. The crew initially believed that the ship just collapsed and sank due to the storm. 

A few days later an Inuit seal hunter had told the group that they saw the S.S. Baychimo around 45 miles off-shore. This was the beginning of the S.S. Baychimo becoming a ghost ship. The ship was reported missing spanning over 3 decades. The last sighting of the ship was in 1969.

MISSING: Adele Marie Wells

 

On November 21, 1958, in Flint, Michigan 7-year-old Adele Marie Wells stayed home from school due to a cold. The second-grader decided to walk to her school, Jefferson Elementary School, that afternoon. She stopped at her grandmother's house around 11:30 to show her how nicely her mother did her hair. Her grandmother only lived a couple of blocks from the school and when she left it was the last time anyone had seen Adele. She never arrived at school.

There had been a report that day of a light-skinned African American man carrying a girl to a dirty Chevrolet. The man was reported to have been wearing a gray coat and red socks. It has not been confirmed that this was Adele's abductor. Other children who attended her school said that a driver with the same description of the car tried luring them into it.

Adele is an African American female and was 7 at the time of her disappearance. She was 3'6 and 50 lbs. She wore her black hair with bangs with waves on the side and had brown eyes. She was wearing a gray cotton coat, a blue dress with small animals along the hem, red knee socks, and black shoes.

On November 12, 1953, the body of an infant was found in the Des Moines River in Des Moines, Iowa. His head was struck and then he was thrown in. His race could not be determined. His body was cremated at the time and there's a low possibility of identification.

 Before November 11, 1896, the body of a baby was found in a patch of weeds on 20th and Charlotte Street in Kansas City, Missouri. The Baby was turned over to the Coroner. The baby was around 2 weeks old.
