On September 26, 1946, 50-year-old Chu "Joe" Kung was visiting Calgary, Alberta, Canada. He was at the time staying at the Alexandra Hotel. Joe had lived in Calgary for several years but moved to Peace River Country. This was the first holiday in town he had in a few years.
On the night of September 29th, he had changed $100 and donated $50 to the Chinese National Fund. He was last seen going to the Chinese Laundry at 306 9th Avenue E around 11:15. Afterwards he would head back to his hotel. When he got near the intersection of 3rd Street and 2 Avenue SE he would be attacked.
It's believed his killer was trying to rob him. For some reason, the robbery went wrong. During it, he would hit Joe around 9 times on his head, likely with an iron pole. A witness would state that when they heard groans they saw a young man throw something in the river.
When Joe was found he was lying face down in his own blood. He was transported to the hospital where he died 44 hours later. His hat was found some distance north and his watch was about 15 feet northwest from him.
The area where the man threw something in the water revealed several iron poles. One of these were likely the murder weapon.
Even though $19.63 was found on him it is believed that his wallet which had more money in it had been stolen. Someone may have witnessed handling a large amount of money and decided to rob him.
