SACRIFICE: Achiometl's daughter

In 1323 the Mexica would ask the new ruler of the Culhuacan, Achicometl, for his daughter as a bride. They would tell him that she would reign as "Sovereign of the Mexica and wife of their god,” Huitzilopochtli".  Achicometl complied not knowing of their actual plans to make her the goddess Yaocihual meant.

He would then bring her to the Mexica. Unbeknownst to Achicometl to make her the goddess Yaocihual meant that his daughter was going to be brutally sacrificed. Her skin was flayed from her body. The Mexica would invite  Achicometl and some of the people of Culhaucan to some festivities.

They would see a dancing priest wearing the young bride's skin. It would anger the Culhuacan people and especially Achicometl. The Mexica were chased out.

GHOSTS: White Lady of Kinsale

Charles Fort is a bastion fort with one section of outer wall built in a star fashion finished in 1682. It's located on the water's edge at the of the village of Summer Come on Kinsale harbor in Ireland. It is now a National Monument of Ireland.

At the Charles Fort in the 1600's, there was an officer named Sir Trevor Ashurst. He would meet Wilful Warrender who's father was Govoner Warrender, the commander of Charles Fort. The two would have a whirlwind romance and would soon fall in love and wed. The Governor was actually happy for the young couple. The two would soon marry and on the wedding day would end in tragedy.

On the night that the two had married, they went to take a walk on the grounds of the fort. The two were to spend their wedding night at the fort. Wilful would see some flowers at the base of the battlement. Trevor was going to go get them, but an on-duty sentry offered to get them instead. Trevor would ask Wilful to wait for him in their room, and he would take the sentry's post so the flowers could be retrieved.

The sentry would not return quickly and because the groom was tired from the day's festivities he fell asleep at the post. Wilful's father went on his nightly inspections. He was known as strict and had a reputation for enforcing strict military codes. When he would stumble across a sentry, who he didn't know at the time was his son-in-law, leaning against the wall seemingly asleep. He called out to the sentry several times and when he got no answer he shot him through the heart.

This was when he realized that it was not any sentry, but his son-in-law. He would be filled with sorrow and regret. Wilful would soon after find out what her father did to her groom. She would be grief-stricken and would take her own life that night. She would jump from one of the ramparts into the icy waters below.  Her father knew that he killed his son-in-law leading to his daughter's suicide. After his daughter's suicide, he would take his own life by shooting himself.

Other versions state after realizing he killed Trevor that he threw jumped the ramparts right after killing him. That Wilful found them both dead and jumped into the icy waters after losing two very important people in her life.

What is known in the tale is that three lives would tragically end on what was supposed to be a joyous day.

It is said that Wilful who is known as The White Lady of Kinsale haunts the area. She is typically seen in her wedding dress. She usually is a kind but sorrowful spirit people in and around Charles Fort are said to have seen her. In particular, she is seen by or near children as if she's keeping an eye on them. Now she did have a mean streak and was known to push soldiers mostly captains down the stairs.

Unsolved Murder of Daniel "Danny" Woods Jr.

In July of 1954 12-year-old Daniel "Danny" Wood Jr. left his home in South Gray, Maine. He was planning on fishing with his friends. His friend only lived a mile down the road. Later he phoned from the Gray Center and told his Mom of his plans that day. He said he was going to Lewiston and help a man with door-to-door calls for 50 cents per hour. She warned her son not to get into a car with a stranger. He then responded everything was alright and to see her later. This was the last time she heard from her son.

A search for the boy began. 16 states were notified of his disappearance and to be on the lookout for him. His family had to be careful with the male in case a ransom letter came. People called in many tips on where the boy was, but none of them were true.

It wasn't till nine days after his disappearance fishermen found his body in Little Androscoggin River. He was nude severely beaten, and it was unknown if it was a sex crime. His clothes were found hidden beneath a rock at the end of a secluded lane and his glasses and belt were tossed into a tree. It could be possible the killer was familiar with the area.

Danny had been severely beaten by his killer. There was a shoelace on one wrist showing his hands had been bound. His skull bore seven wounds about four inches long the weapon used was never found. It's unknown where the crime scene of the murder was as there was no evidence it had happened there. It's believed the killer tossed him in after Danny died.

They did have a suspect named Herman Barmore. Police asked if he about Daniel, but he stated anything he knew was going to the grave with him. He had served a life sentence for the murder of another boy named Peter Gorman in 1955. He initially said it was an accident he shot the boy, and then he redacted saying the Sheriff offered a deal. He was convicted of the murder. He would only serve 11 years as he died in prison in 1966. He denied killing either boy though.

MONSTERS: Jenny Greenteeth

Jenny Greenteeth is a monster that shows up in English folklore. She’s described as an old hag that has green skin, long arms, wild green hair, and sharp teeth. She often waits in the water and is seen as pond-weed or clumps of water plants. Her preferred victims are children and the elderly, but sometimes a traveler becomes a victim. She traps them in the water and drowns them.

In Britain Duckweed covers many ponds and bodies of water. Sometimes it looks solid and children who don’t know better try to walk on it. It’s believed that the tale of Jenny Greenteeth may have been created to scare children and prevent drownings.

In 1865 44-year-old Thomas A. Byne was a slave owner, physician, and noteworthy landowner. He lived in upper Burke County, Georgia. At this time 6 or 7 of his newly freed slaves began to plot against him. They believed that they would get his land split among them.

On July 18, 1865, one of the former slaves, Essex Walker, shot Thomas to death with a shotgun. It was unclear if Essex was the ringleader or just the trigger man. He was arrested and convicted of the crime. Essex was hanged on March 23, 1866, in Augusta, Georgia.

Murders of Freda Burnell and Florence Little

Freda Burnell                         Florence Little

On the morning of  5 Feb. 1921 around 9 a.m. 8-year-old Freda Burnell went to buy poultry grit and spice at Mortimer's Corn Store on Somerset Street in Abertillery, Wales. She would arrive at the store where 15-year-old Harold Jones was working. He would be the last person to see Freda alive.

He would somehow get the girl to the chicken run shed belonging to Harold's employer. This was where he would attack and kill the girl. He would tie up her elbows behind her back, and ankles together. She would have been gagged, and he would attempt to sexually assault her. He would hit her in the head with an ax handle and strangled her with a cord.

Later Freda's father would go and search for the girl, but she could not be found. He would go to the shop and ask if she had been there. Harold would tell him that she had been there, but was only there for 10 minutes and said that she was going to ask her father if loose poultry grit was okay. By 3 p.m. police were informed of the girl's disappearance. For 6 hours they searched for her, but could not find her. At 10:20 to 10:30 Harold kept others from the shed and went to it on his own.

Freda's body would be found at 7:30 the next morning. She was concealed in a bag still bound with the cord still wrapped around her neck. It was noted that traces of corn Chaff was found on her body. The police would look at the shed that Jones and his employers only had access to. Inside the shed, the ax handle used to beat her and her handkerchief was found hidden among sacking.

Harold would soon be arrested and tried for Freda's murder on 21 June. He would remain calm at trial even during his testimony for his own defense withstanding rigorous cross-examination. His employer Hebert Mortrimer would provide an alibi insisting that his son and Harold were working in the store before they were sent to deliver a sack of potatoes to a customer around 10 a.m. His father would also testify that Harold did not leave the home that night and leave Freda's body where it was found. His testimony was corroborated by his wife's and it was noted that he exhibited good behavior with young girls.

Evidence showing that Freda was likely killed by Harold. He had contradicted himself on several occasions in the initial inquest. Despite this after the jury deliberated for 5 hours and he would be acquitted for Freda's murder.

There were numerous supporters for Harold at the time. Many believed that a 15-year-old could not kill and sexually assault a young child. After a private reunion with his parents, they would be escorted to a local restaurant to eat. At the service, Harold would state "I thank you all. I do not hold a grudge against the people of Abertillery for the horrendous ordeal I have been put through." One of those who would greet him would be George Little a neighbor who would say "Well done, lad. We knew you didn't do it."

This would be a statement he would soon regret.

On8 July and 17 days after Harold was acquitted he noticed 11-year-old Florence Little and her sister Flossie outside his home on 10 Darran Rd. Harold would ask the young girl into his home to help him run an errand. She would go inside the home and be attacked. He would instantly partially strangle the girl and dragged her to the kitchen. He would beat her in the head and temple with a plank of wooded before suspending her head and neck over the sick where he grabbed her by the hair and slit her throat with his father's pocket knife.

He would wrap Florence's head with a grey army shirt and concealed her partially dressed body in the attic. He washed all the blood he could find and then proceed to take a bath. Florence's mother would come to the Jones home in search of her. Harold would tell her that she was there at his front door, but had run off.

At 11:15 p.m. police were notified of Florence's disappearance which led to the house to house searches, and woodland and mountains were searched. There were hundreds of volunteers including Harold Jones.

Police would still suspect the boy of this killing. When asked he repeated the lies he told Mrs. Little. With his father's consent, the police searched the home at 8:30 a.m. and Harold would sneak out of the home knowing she would be found.

Police found that the trapdoor for the attic and a table nearby was blood-stained and had evidence of an attempt of being cleaned. They searched the attic and found the little girl's body outstretched on the rafters. An extended search of the home led to the blood-stained knife, a small egg-saucepan filled with blood and water, a blood-stained plank 19 inches long beneath the boiler.

When Phillip Jones was informed of the girl's murder he left the home to perform a citizen's arrest on his son. The two would then go back to Darran rd where Harold was placed under arrest. When the public heard of Harold's arrest for a second murdered girl around 500 people case to the local police station requesting that he be let free.

This was when Superintendent Lewis would address the crowd. "I have found the body of a child in the attic of Harold Jones, foully murdered, and I have arrested Harold Jones. I think this is all I can tell you and it would help us if you disperse and go to your homes."

On 11 Julyinquest into Florence Little's murder began. On 23 July the jury took 30 minutes to find Harold guilty of murder. During this inquest, Harold was adamant about being innocent. While waiting for his trial in November though on 17 September he made a statement about the motive for the crimes. He said it was " a desire to kill" that led to the deaths.

On 1 November 1921, he was tried in front of  Mr. Justice  Bray. The trial only last one hour and was ordered to be detained at His Majestys Pleasure. Harold was under 16 at the time and couldn't be subjected to any capital punishment. He would state that he also killed Freda because of his "desire to kill".

The grocery store was relocated and the Mortimer's moved. He felt guilt and may people were blaming him for giving a false alibi and it helped allow Harold to be able to kill  Florence.

Harold would get out of prison on 6 December 1941. He would go and join the Merchant Navy. By 1948 he would then reside in Fulham, London, England under the name Harry Stevens.  He would then go on and have a family and go by Harry. He would get bone cancer and die on 2 Jan. 1971 in London, England. At the time he was going by Harry Jones and before he died he would tell his wife to put Harold Jones on his death certificate.

Both Freda and Florence were buried in Brynithel Cemetary. Over the decades their graves would fall into disrepair. In 2017 a local author Neil Milkins helped raise £4,000 to help restore the graves and in 2018 they were able to do that. Family members of the girls appreciated that the graves were restored.

End Of Watch: Robert Wehagen

Patrolman Robert Wehagen | Cleveland Division of Police, Ohio

On July 8, 1938, 48-year-old Matthew Bubich escaped a state ward in a private sanitarium in Cleavland, Ohio. At 3 a.m. he removed a screen from the second floor and climbed down the fire escape in his pajamas. He would then show up at his former butcher shop. It's unknown how he had gotten there as the sanitarium was far away.

He would beat on the door with a limb that was 4ft long and 3 inches thick. His wife Anna and 15-year-old daughter Anna who lived in the rear woke up to the sound. Mary brought him a change of clothes, but he would become angry after she was not able to find his belt.

He would angrily go to the butcher shop and grab a butcher knife and locked the door. He told the girls to keep still or he would kill them. He eventually changed his mind and Anna and Mary and her son were told to leave and they did. They went to neighbors and called the police.

Five patrolmen would arrive one of which was 42-year-old Robert Wehagen. Mrs. Bubich gave Patrolman Wehagen the key and he opened the door. When he stepped in he was cautious, but Mathew was hiding behind the door. This was when he slashed down with the butcher knife. As he fell from his injuries he discharged a tear-gas shell. Seeing the man attacking Patrolman Wehagen discharged their weapons and also discharged tear gas.

Mathew was still alive but died a few minutes after arriving at the hospital. Robert was still alive and was also taken to the hospital. While in surgery he died. It had turned out when he was stabbed his intestines were severed in five different places.

Murder of Hazel Weinstein

On July 7, 1914, a salesman named 27-year-old Roswell Smith would lure 4-year-old Hazel Weinstein into an alley near her home in Chicago, Illinois. Roswell would then sexually assault the young girl. During the assault, he either strangled or suffocated the girl. Panicked he went to a nearby house and knocked on the door holding the girl who was faintly breathing. He would tell them that he found the girl in the alley this way. She would die a short time later.

A witness would come forward stating that a man that looked like Roswell was with the girl a short time before her death. Roswell would confess that he had a flash the Tuesday night before the attack and he became obsessed with the idea. They would then try to claim that his seizures caused him to attack and kill the girl. He was also considered mentally "defective" and eccentric, but harmless. He would still be found guilty and sentenced to hang.

On Feb. 13, 1915, Roswell would be executed. His last words before executions were; "I will raise my eyes unto the hills, whence cometh my help."
